CampbellReith provided a wide range of engineering design services for a storage centre of military equipment for the UAE Military Museum, in Abu Dhabi.
The centre, of circa 50000m2, was required as an archive for UAE military items ranging from small aircrafts, tanks and personnel carriers down to uniforms, maps, medals and other smaller props.
The proposed location for the facility was approximately 37 km north east of Abu Dhabi City, 5km from the E11Sheik Maktoum Bin Rashid Road. The site is approximately 1.5kms north of the existing Main Access Gate to the Zayed Military City.
The project brief included four buildings to be designed, including a large macro storage shed; a smaller non-macro store and specialist store; ancillary building including conservation areas, briefing and teaching spaces; and an energy centre.
The structural form of the building had to be determined by the size and scale of the archive collection. In the case of the macro storage shed, artefacts included wheeled and tracked vehicles, together with large artillery pieces and aircraft. Movement of these objects within the space required the provision of overhead travelling cranes.
A proposed access road to the site was provided, which was intended to serve the existing Maintenance Corps facilities to the east. Carefully controlled environmental conditions were required within the building particularly in areas containing smaller and delicate artefacts i.e maps or textiles together with areas designated for the UAE Royal Family Gift collection.
