The £6.5m Premier Grandstand was opened as planned in August 2010 following just twelve months of hectic construction at this famous south coast National Hunt course.
The new three storey steel framed stand features hospitality boxes, a restaurant for 250 people and a multi-purpose exhibition hall on the ground floor, with catering and betting facilities.
The concrete terraces provide accommodation for up to 1200 spectators. The new stand is positioned directly in front of the finishing post and provides panoramic views across the figure-of-eight chase and oval hurdles courses.
Work at the racecourse began with the demolition of the existing 1920’s stand. The building is clad in a combination of brickwork and bronze cladding, with full height glazing to the upper viewing levels. Throughout the construction programme Fontwell’s fortnightly race meetings continued unaffected by the works. Phil Bell, course manager for our client Northern Racing, said: ‘We would bracket ourselves as the best of the smaller tracks at the moment and the new grandstand is part of a plan to move Fontwell Park into the racing premier league”.
Fontwell Park racecourse was voted ‘Racecourse of the Year’ at the March 2011 Betview Awards. Fontwell Park was shortlisted along with Lingfield Park and winners Punchestown. The award is presented to the racecourse which provides the best experience for the racing public.
