CampbellReith is proud to have been appointed by West Wittering Estate PLC to provide civil, structural, geotechnical and geo-environmental consultancy services for the new Safety and Facilities Hub on the blue flag beach in West Sussex. Working closely with Cover Storey Architects and Project Managers SMD Construction Consultancy, the team are developing the design for the hub which includes a new lifeguard tower and terrace, medical facilities, public toilets and staff changing rooms. The works will also involve improvements to the access roads and disabled parking areas plus provision of a new emergency vehicle bay. The new building is located on the beach within a site of Special Scientific Interest within Chichester Harbour and close to the recently completed Beach Café. The new building will cater for up to 20,000 visitors a day at the height of the season.

In keeping with the Beach Café building, the new structure comprises several different cladding systems including timber, Corten steel and stone gabions. A planted shingle roof has been designed to encourage bio-diversity and is a key element of the sustainable surface water drainage system to slow the rate of surface water runoff from the site. Roof mounted Photovoltaic panels have been included to further enhance the new building’s sustainability.

Having completed the civil and structural design of the Beach Café building in 2019, CampbellReith’s team has been able to tie the new drainage systems into the existing network including an upgrade to the existing foul water pumping station. and utilise similar robust building techniques.

A detailed planning application has been submitted for the new building with construction likely to commence in Autumn 2023.
