Our AGS and IStructE collaboration

16 February 2024

We are very proud that our Geotechnical Associate Katharine Barker has AGAIN received the AGS Geotechnical Working Group Award! She received the 2024 award in recognition of the contribution she makes to the working group and her recent presentation on underpinning at the AGS Ground Risk Conference in November 2023 https://www.campbellreith.com/news/ags-ground-risk-conference-are-you-managing-risks-or-taking-risks-as-one-of-the-speakers. Well done Kat!

This involvement with a major trade association for the industry is important for the development of geotechnical engineers on a personal level and for the discipline as a whole. As new challenges approach, such as climate change, so new technologies or methodologies emerge, and it has never been so important for cross-discipline interaction and collaboration for the efficiency and success of a project.

Our structural engineering colleagues at CampbellReith benefit from being able to directly speak to ground engineering colleagues on a daily basis and as a result we have an increased understanding of each other’s disciplines and can offer holistic solutions. However, a lot of structural and geotechnical teams across the industry do not have such a luxury, and we’re therefore very excited that CampbellReith is driving forward a more collaborative future by leading a newly founded subgroup within the AGS which aims to work closely with the IStructE. The purpose of this group is to share knowledge across both disciplines and increase the collaborative links between structural and geotechnical engineers within the industry.

This closer working relationship will see a series of thought leadership articles published in the AGS and IStructE magazines as well as speakers presenting at respective seminars and conferences. And later this year, CampbellReith’s Emma Pike will be delivering a course to Structural Engineers at the IStructE on Ground Investigation and Foundation Design (https://www.istructe.org/events/hq/2024/ground-investigations-and-outline-foundation/)

Look out for other AGS and IStructE events and resources, as well as opportunities to contribute to this more collaborative future!
