Hartsdown Academy, Margate

CampbellReith was appointed by Kier Southern to provide structural and civil engineering design services on the redevelopment of the Hartsdown Academy in Margate, Kent, as part of the the Department for Education's "Priority Schools Building Programme 2".

Client: Hartsdown Academy

Architect: Lee Evans Partnership

Contractor: Kier Southern

Value: £9m

This development consists of two phases to provide new teaching and sports facilities to the existing school campus.

Phase 1 required the demolition of an outdated annex building to make way for the three storey building, providing new additional classrooms as well as a new resistant materials suite, art studios, food tech, library, kitchen and an impressive dining room with feature staircase.

Phase 2 was to extend the existing sports facilities with the careful partial demolition around the existing sports hall and to then build new changing rooms, large activity room and further teaching space.

Challenges surrounded the surface water drainage proposal for the site. Due to the site having already been developed, following SuDS hierarchy and the ground conditions being favourable, cellular infiltration tanks were to be installed. These were required to be placed sufficiently far enough away from any existing or proposed structure whilst at sufficient depth below ground and into the suitable strata and above the water table.
