Building a sustainable future

Sustainable principles underpin all that we do at CampbellReith

We have had a comprehensive Environmental Management System accredited to ISO 14001 integrated with our Quality Management System since 2017, with commitments to reducing the environmental impacts of our operations and purchasing, and considering the impacts of our designs across the design process, and are committed to continual improvement.

We are now establishing a new framework that allows us to assess our direct and most immediate indirect sustainable impacts. At the heart of this framework are the internationally established UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Of the 17 SDG’s, CampbellReith has identified the 11 against which we are developing our ambitious strategy to have the greatest influence in both our operations and our project delivery.

We are developing clear and inspiring Sustainable Performance Indicators against which we can measure our business impact and monitor our ongoing improvement.

UN Sustainable Development Goals – Strategy Actions

UN Goal 3 - Good Health and Well-being

We will continue to support and promote the good health and wellbeing for our employees and their immediate families through numerous best practice companywide policies, programmes, and benefits.

UN Goal 5 - Gender Equality

We are dedicated to improving gender equality through recruitment and promotion and will continue to invest in learning and training for all staff to address unconscious bias and eradicate inappropriate behaviours.

UN Goal 6 - Clean Water And Sanitation

We are delivering efficient, leading-edge Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) solutions that improve water quality through natural and biological filtration, where possible. We will continue to promote attenuation through natural measures with rainwater and grey-water re-use where viable.

UN Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy

We are expanding our existing skills in engineering delivery and minimisation of the environmental impacts of non-nuclear, low-carbon and renewable energy projects including wind and solar farm projects and retrofitting generation to existing schemes. We aim to procure our operational energy supply through green energy providers where possible and will lobby our landlords to follow suit and promote the uptake to employees to reduce our working from home impact.

UN Goal 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

We will build on our record of providing sustainable design solutions for industrial facilities including refurbishing and repurposing existing industrial buildings and will promote improvements in sustainable and resilient infrastructure, innovation in construction and modern methods of construction.

UN Goal 10 - Reduced Inequalities

We are proud that our company culture is focused on inclusivity, and we are continually improving equality and diversity and have invested in learning and training for all staff to address unconscious bias and behaviours. Many of our projects are delivering improved Social Mobility to the stakeholder communities and this is considered in our engineering and environmental solutions.

UN Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities

We will continue to design and deliver sustainable improvements to our city and community infrastructure including green and blue infrastructure, mixed-use and car-free developments with 5-minute neighbourhoods and 15-minute communities. We will also continue to support our local communities and community-led design and development and contributing to Social Value within our work and designs.

UN Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production

We are committing to furthering our significant experience with re-purposing and refurbishing existing assets and to investing in training and knowledge and experience dissemination to promote best practice in design and construction to the circular economy principles to refurbish, reclaim, reuse, recycle

UN Goal 13 - Climate Action

We have made combatting climate change a business imperative; built into everything we do. We are committed to monitoring and reducing our operational carbon footprint from travel including commuting, to moving our offices towards our Net Zero consumption targets. We are undertaking and providing embodied carbon assessments of our engineering and design solutions, promoting innovation in reuse and low and zero carbon solutions to embodied and operational carbon.

UN Goal 15 - Life on Land

We aim to protect our natural habitats and ecosystems and promote brownfield development, using our existing extensive experience in restoring ecosystems through land remediation and regenerative design principles. We provide green and blue infrastructure across all our schemes, positively contributing to a net biodiversity gain and improving water quality.

Partnerships for the goals

We are committed to collaborating with the wider industry both within the UK and Internationally.

Innovating and leading on sustainability

At CampbellReith we know that innovation and leadership are integral factors to achieving our goal of becoming a truly Sustainable company.

As such, we have been working hard to implement innovative systems and tools in project design and delivery, staying abreast of the latest research, and collaborating with the wider industry.

A few examples of this include:

  • Creating and implementing a system to internally score the sustainability rating of all our design work, from every discipline. The Sustainable Design Tool we have developed for this purpose serves also to challenge our Engineers and Scientists to always consider whether their designs can be further optimised, whilst providing more sustainable solutions.
  • Through calculating the embodied carbon of designs, using our bespoke embodied carbon calculator, we ensure we are proposing the solutions with the lowest impact and refining our designs as projects progress.
  • We are committed to further research, training, and collaboration with the wider industry, both domestic and global, to deliver a sustainable built environment.
