Heathrow World Distribution Centre is a sorting office for international mail operated by Royal Mail situated in Langley, near Slough.
All mail entering and leaving the United Kingdom is sorted at this 473,628 ft² state-of-the-art automated distribution facility, under tight aviation security standards, following the closure of all other international mail handling facilities in the UK.
Royal Mail Property Holdings appointed CampbellReith to carry out the design work for a £46m fit out of the centre.
The works included doubling the office accommodation to 107,600 ft² as well as creating high level walkways to support mechanical and electrical services such as air-conditioning ducts.
The walkways were suspended at high level from the underside of the roof trusses and formed a continuous services access route approximately 1500 m in length.
Siemens Dematic undertook the £100m contract to supply and install automation equipment, which required the fibre reinforced ground slab to be designed for loadings of 50 kN/m² and point loads up to 264 kN.
