The project is a storage centre (circa 538195 ft2) for military equipment of the UAE Military Museum. The military kit consists of a wide range of items, from small aircraft, tanks, personnel carriers down to uniforms, medals, etc.
The proposed location for the facility is approximately 37 km north east of Abu Dhabi City, 5 km from the E11 Sheik Maktoum Bin Rashid Road. The site is approximately 1.5 km north of the existing Main Access Gate to the Zayed Military City.
A new access road to the site is planned, which will also serve the existing Maintenance Corps facilities to the east.
A collection of 4 buildings are envisaged including a large macro storage shed, smaller non-macro store and specialist store, ancillary building including conservation areas, workshops, briefing and teaching spaces, and an energy centre.
The structural form of the building will be driven by the size and scale of the archive collection, particularly the macro artefacts. These include wheeled and tracked vehicles, together with large artillery pieces and aircraft, and movement of these objects within the space will in addition require provision of overhead travelling cranes. Preliminary special studies undertaken to date would indicate that internal column free clear spans of these spaces will need to be 25 m to 30 m.
Carefully controlled environmental conditions will be required in the building, particularly in areas containing non-macro artfacts, i.e maps, textiles etc., together with areas designated for the UAE Royal Family Gift collection.
