St Thomas’ Hospital project is a major refurbishment and alteration initiative within a ‘live’ hospital environment. CampbellReith has provided structural, civil and geotechnical engineering services alongside Wilson Mason Architects.
The project centres around the 4th floor of Block 8 of St Thomas’ Hospital, London SE1, which was originally constructed during the 1860s.
The project comprises structural assessment of the existing roof and floor structure, demolition of part of the existing 4th floor, installation of new sections of floor structure and the construction of a new fire escape stair. The project team also extended the lift core to serve the fourth floor. This required 3D CAD visualisation of the existing structure to determine the feasibility of the scheme.
Throughout the project the design team needed to remain sensitive to the on-going operational needs of the hospital.
