Poplar Block is a new 58,100 ft², three-storey research laboratory located at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute.
CampbellReith provided structural, civil, geotechnical and environmental engineering services for Poplar Block. The project encompassed the design and construction of a new surface level car park to accommodate 220 cars, together with a new gate house, link bridge, access roads and infrastructure upgrades.
The main laboratory building, which accommodates Cancer Research UK’s continuing research into signal transduction and genome integrity, is intensively serviced, requiring close collaboration between CampbellReith and the project MEP consultant in order to develop a fully integrated services/structure solution.
Future flexibility in use is a key consideration demanding a structure capable of accommodating the changing developments of scientific research. The sensitive nature of the scientific procedures taking place within the finished facility demanded careful consideration to be given to the dynamic performance and surface level tolerances of all suspended floor slabs.
