Building Information Modelling (BIM) is integral to our approach in project delivery. Our processes and systems are externally accredited to ISO 19650 and deliver benefits to every phase of the project life-cycle.

The processes adopted by both the design and construction teams promote collaboration, enhance understanding and information management, driving sustainability, improving coordination and reducing waste.

To date, this has been one of our most complex BIM schemes. Involving the coordination of several complex design teams and supplier models over ten years. From inception, we worked closely with our NHS Trust client, helping them to develop their information requirements to PAS1192 BIM standards. The data and models helped to provide a framework for collaboration to ensure that all members of the design team had the most up to date and complete information. The CampbellReith BIM team was responsible for producing COBiedata for all assets, both maintainable and non-maintainable. This exchange was achieved through the .ifcmodel.

Viewpoint: This was used from post tender through to handover of the project to client using PAS 1192 standards for workflows, naming conventions and document management.

Taking BIM to the next level through collaboration

CampbellReith has been actively using, developing and supporting the Building Information Modelling process in collaboration with a number of design teams and contractors since 2010. We have been using Revit as our main BIM authoring tool since early 2005 and have built a wealth of knowledge and capabilities in that time.

Contractors have many solutions to review and interrogate the consultant and subconsultant models. We have had experience working with contractors using BCF files, Navisworks coordination models, and online tools such as BIMCollab, and Revizto. They use these tools to review and interrogate the models for clashes or discrepancies, and using other packages such as Synchro take the information from the models, to create a virtual construction timeline. They can also extract information from the models concerning cost and quantities.

We have experience in adapting our models to allow for a modified COBIE output. Working in conjunction with the client’s representative and the design team we refined the parameters, information required, and level of development to ensure the client is able to extract accurate and useful information from the model to aid in future facilities management processes and decisions.

The carefully managed use of BIM provides benefits in improved design coordination; collaboration; visualisation; improved understanding of costs, and build programming.

The BIM processes and relevant standards are developing rapidly and lessons learned both by ourselves, other professionals and contracting organisations are shared with our clients’ project teams and incorporated into projects to our mutual benefit.

£192m, residential development in Wembley E03.

The project comprises 743 apartments in seven residential blocks ranging from 10 to 25 storey in height above a 2-3 storey podium structure.

CERTIFICATION ENDORSEMENT

CampbellReith’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems are aligned with best industry practice and are externally accredited by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

Originally accredited in 2017 and more recently gaining certification to ISO 19650, we consistently apply these high standards and every year, our protocols and documents are reviewed by an independent BIM auditor.

As part of our approach to continuous innovation, we are consulting with clients and stakeholders to comply with BS 8644-1 and FIRierequirements, and exploring ways that we can help support clients in deciding what data it is possible to supply to meet these upcoming standards.

OUR METHOD

We have produced our own Building Information Modelling Protocol docu­ ment based on industry BIM standards, in order to define the processes to be adopted on all our BIM projects. This protocol and the project BIM execution plan, developed in conjunction with the design team in response to the client’s information requirements, informs our modelling and design output.

As a practice we encourage all staff to engage in ongoing training, share knowledge through internal company project presentations, and achieve BRE BIM certification. In order to complement these processes we also have internal BIM team meetings to exchange ideas and learning and we chair a cross-company Structural BIM Forum to share knowledge and promote best practice in the industry.
