Aspire PFI, Project Allenby Connaught – Storage buildings

CampbellReith designed twenty storage buildings ranging in size from 100 m² to 3100 m². These buildings, with associated office accommodation, provide storage space  for a host of technical and unit requirements.

The buildings were generally of single storey steel portal framed construction braced, in two directions. Steel rafters supported proprietary standing seam/composite roofing to Architect’s specification on cold rolled purlins. Typical spans of the buildings ranged from 8 m to 21 m.

Perimeter masonry panels were strengthened by wind-posts and transferred the horizontal wind loads into the portal frames and bracing.

Foundations generally were insitu mass concrete pad foundations beneath main superstructure columns. Mass concrete trench fill foundations were placed below perimeter walls and full height internal division walls.

Ground floors were generally insitu reinforced concrete ground bearing slabs, incorporating underfloor heating pipes, with fabric reinforcement and floated finish over insulation, dpm (to Architect’s specification) and granular sub-base.

Project Allenby/Connaught is the MoD’s redevelopment project for the Garrisons in Aldershot and around Salisbury Plain. The 35-year PFI contract has a capital value of more than £1.4 billion and a through life value of more than £8 billion.

The project is providing 360 new buildings and 155 refurbished buildings over a nine-year construction period to achieve a modern living and working environment, with associated support services for some 18,000 personnel.
